How to install carpet and what materials and tools do you need? Apart from the carpet, you will need a pad, tack strip that is as wide as possible and nails and screws. A hammer and a screwdriver are the necessary tools, which you most probably have at home. You will also need a tack strip cutter, a knee kicker, a power stretcher and a plastic paddle.
Keep in mind that this guide on how to install carpet does not include seaming steps. This is because seaming is a professional task that is not recommended to DIY enthusiasts. In many cases, the manufacturer will require professional seaming in order for the warranty of the product to be valid. Now that you know this, you can readily follow the installation steps.
Measure the room and ensure that your carpet has the right length and width. Insert drywall screws into any squeaks in the subfloor to prepare it for the installation. This is the first step of the guide on how to install carpet.
Install tack strip along the walls. The distance between the wall edge and the strip should be three eights of an inch. This distance is hard to measure, but it is actually close to the thickness of a human finger so you can readily use your fingers to make the measurement. Ensure that the strip is firmly installed. Nail down the tack strip.
Lay out the pad that you have got. Start from the wall of the room that is diagonally across the door. Trim the pad so that it does not stretch beyond the tact strip’s edge. Staple down the pad every 2 feet to ensure it is firmly installed. This is how to install carpet padding.
Get the carpet into the room and roll it over starting from the wall across the door. Make sure there is excess along the sides so that you can model it in anyway you like.
Make a line on the carpet right at the edge of the baseboard. Then cut the excess pieces. Ensure the carpet is flush to the floor.
Starting from the corner of the room, place a nail every four inches and hammer it down half way through the carpet. Using wide-head nails is recommended so that you can remove them easily.
Use the plastic paddle to tack down the carpet into the gulley between the wall and the tack strip. Press the carpet firmly to the strip, using the wooden end of the hammer. Make sure you do not hammer the carpet as this will prevent it from tacking to the strip.
Use the power stretcher in sections and makes sure you press hard when you run it over the tack strip. Make sure that there is good traction between the stretcher’s head and the carpet at all times.
Trim the carpet by pressing hard on the baseboard using the trimmer.
This is how to install carpet. Vacuum it after it is installed.
